Another week in indiepop. How’s everyone doing? Are there any upcoming festivals that are you looking forward to? Paris Popfest next month looks pretty good, no?
Zac Denton: do you remember the very good Aussie band The Ocean Party? Well, I just learned that one of their members, Zac Denton, is releasing an album titled “Love Lust Lost” on August 26 on Emotional Response. The album will be out on vinyl LP and include 15 songs. We can preview now the opening track, “Ciggie Whinge”, which is a mellow poppy one.
Dylan Mondegreen: the Norwegian popster is back with a digital single! It is called “A Sound Rings True” and as his previous releases it is really good! Børg Sildnes continues to create quality pop and I hope this song signifies that a new record is in the horizon.
The Slow Summits: one of my favourite Swedish bands of the last few years is also back after 8 or so months. The Linköping combo comes back with a digital single titled “Time’s On Your Side” and as usual with them, it is a winner!
Candymouse: this is a superb release, very limited in its lathe cut 7″ version but there are CDs available too. Candymouse features members of The Candy Darlings and Mousefolk and on this record they have released two new songs, “King of the Pricks” and “Ready Salted”. In the past I’ve interviewed The Candy Darlings, and now I think it would be nice to talk with Mousefolk!
Pete Astor: the ex-Weather Prophets leader is back with a new album!! Coming out on September 9 on Tapete Records, “Time on Earth” promises a lot. The two songs one can preview, “English Weather” and “Time on Earth” sound terrific. Seems like another must-have to add to our collection!

Who were Loveland?
Our friend stoneeyedkiller hints us with the song “Perfect Picture” that there is a band we need to discover. Why? Because the song is a beautiful piece of jingle jangly pop!
He tells us just two details before we go into our detective work. That is that the song was recorded in 1992 and that the band hailed from West Yorkshire.
I am thinking, West Yorkshire is quite a big area. Where in West Yorkshire? Leeds? Bradford? Huddersfield? Wakefield? Halifax? Keighley? Dewsbury? Or somewhere else? It turns out the band was from Birkenshaw and Gomersal. Never heard of these places myself.
The band was formed by Richard Thomas on vocals and rhythm guitar, Rick Graves on lead guitars, Russ Waterhouse on bass and backing vocals and Jon Grey on drums.
Luckily I was to find three more songs on Youtube as Richard Thomas, the vocalist of the band, uploaded them here in 2017.
Aside from uploading “Perfect Picture” he has uploaded “Torch” and “Come Clean“.
He gives us some details. For “Torch” he tells us it was the band’s debut recording and that it was produced by Michael Price in 1991. “Come Clean” dates from 1992. This last song is less jangly, a bit much more early 90s sounding, Madchester influenced.
And then he also tells us that the band played in London, Leeds in Nottingham.
I can’t seem to find anything else by them. There’s a well known Russ Waterhouse in the US that has played for other bands and has his own label, but not sure if it is the same. I find also a US based drummer called Jon Grey, but again, can’t say if it is the same one. Richard Thomas is a more common name and my detective skills maybe not the best to track him down and see if he was involved in other music projects.
And yeah, that’s all. I wonder if there are more recordings and also where did these three recordings come from? Demo tapes? Was there any release? Anyone remembers them?

Loveland – Perfect Picture
One Response to “:: Loveland”
I played bass on torch. It was a one-off recording and then dropped for Russ. I was away at university. Actually sounds pretty crisp today.
